Passiflora Incarnata or maypop plant belongs to the family of Passifloraceae. The plant is also known as Krishna Kamal. The reason behind this name is the structure of the flower. Some say that the flower of the plant is associated with Mahabharata of Indian Mythology. According to the Indian mythology, the 5 petals of the plant indicates the Pandavas; the small petals are around 100 indicating the Kauravas while the corona of the flower depicts Draupadi.
The plant needs a sunny location with a less windy area. The passiflora needs the morning sunlight while they need to be protected from the afternoon sun. Make sure you provide support to the passiflora as it is a climber.
The plant requires abundant of sunlight. You can provide from full sun to partial shade. The best time to plant the passiflora is during the late spring using proper fertilizers and direct sunlight.
If you are planting it indoors then southern exposure window would be perfect for it. If the flowers fail to bloom then provide the plant with direct sunlight
A well aerated moist soil is required by the plant. They are hardy evergreen climbers so they require a strong support while growing. You can plant the passiflora inside a large clay pot. It would help in maintaining a healthy root system.
4to 5 cups of water would be sufficient for the maypop. They have moderate needs. Let the soil dry out between the watering. Create a draining hole inside the pot to provide saturation of water and soil.
Passiflora flower is humongous in size. The diameter of the flower is around 9.8 cm. They bloom from July to September. The flower has one prominent color i.e. white color with violet corona. They own yellow stamens and around three to four purple stigmas. Passiflora has a life of one day
The average height of the passiflora is around 5 feet. They need an average amount of ground cover to grow. Passiflora requires a space of 33 to 65 inches in between two plants.
