Mamey sapote is a large and highly ornamental evergreen tree that can reach a height of 15 to 45 meterst. It is mainly propagated by grafting, which ensures the new plant has the same characteristics as the parent
A small tree to 33 ft (10 in) high, with spreading branches, the guava is easy to recognize because of its smooth, thin, copper-colored bark that flakes off, showing the greenish layer beneath, and also because of the attractive, “bony” aspect of its trunk which may in time attain a diameter of 10 in (25 cm).
Lemon (Nimbu) Plants
Lemon, Citrus limon, is a small evergreen tree in the family Rutaceae grown for its edible fruit which, among other things, are used in a variety of foods and drinks. The tree has a spreading, upright growth habit, few large branches and stiff thorns. The tree possesses large, oblong or oval, light green leaves and produces purple-white flowers in clusters.
The Lychee fruit are ripening and getting close to the picking time. As you can see in the accompanying video the Mauritius fruit are a couple of weeks away from the beginning of picking. This year is a mixed grill. It appears as though there will be no Sweethearts. While this may be very disappointing to some, it is much better than prior years when we had nothing and I might add that the Brewster is the best tasting of all the lychee fruit (when it is ripe).
Oranges are a variety of Citrus, which grow on attractive, ornamental evergreen trees, usually reaching a height of up to 1.8m (6ft). They are not reliably cold hardy in Britain, so are best grown outside in containers from late spring/early summer to the beginning of autumn, and then brought inside for the winter.
Orange trees produce lovely, white, fragrant flowers that appear all year round, but more profusely during late winter. The fruit ripens around 12 months later, so they may be in flower and fruit at the same time. They are self-fertile, so you will only need to grow one tree to get fruit.
They don’t make great houseplants, as they need plenty of light and most rooms – apart from a conservatory – aren’t really light enough or suitable. They dislike central heating, as this makes rooms too hot and stuffy with a lack of essential humidity.
Other citrus you can grow at home includes lemon and limes.
Pomegranate, Punica granatum, is a deciduous or evergreen tree or shrub in the family Punicaceae grown for its edible fruits. The pomegranate tree is branched and spiny with glossy, leathery, oval to oblong leaves that grow in whorls of five or more on the branches. The tree produces bright red flowers singly at the tips of the branches and a rounded hexagonal fruit with a thick pink-red skin. The fruit has a thick, leathery rind which protects the pulp[ and seeds inside. The inside of the fruit is separated into compartments by white spongy tissue. Each compartment contains seeds and pulp.
